| Eterna 1948 Grand DateThe quintessence of true competence in self-winding watches
The world of mechanical timepieces experienced a revolution in 1948. Eterna, one of the most eminent manufacturers, had introduced a sea change based on five tiny spheres. They thoroughly and permanently eliminated the greatest shortcoming of self-winding movements: the friction-prone rotor bearing. It was only natural that this groundbreaking invention embodied in the Eterna·Matic would advance to become the global standard once the patents expired. But even then, Eterna had much more to offer: An ingenious system for polarising the motion of the rotor as well as a sophisticated gear train which significantly boosted the efficiency of the winding system. These inventions, too, are still very much up-to-date. Moreover, precision, quality, dependability and ease of service have always been at the core of the Eterna philosophy. As a salute to this pioneering spirit and in commemoration of the future of the automatic era, the Eterna·Matic 1948 will always rank prominently in the company's collections – with its authentic case and the see-through back which reveals the brilliance of the timeless movement with all the details that turned the original Eterna·Matic into a legend. On the occasion of the World Watch, Clock and Jewellery Show 2002 in Basel, Eterna completed the successful models of the 2001 trilogy: Eterna·Matic 1948 with Chronometer Certificate Eterna·Matic 1948 Moon-Phase Chronograph with Chronometer Certificate Eterna·Matic 1948 Alarm Eterna Matic 1948 with Chronometer Certificate and Grande Date All 1948 models feature a mechanical self-winding movement with the original ball-bearing rotor design. The rhodium-plated movement has blued steel screws and is decorated by hand. The case is an exact replica of the first Eterna·Matic 1948. Each model has a cambered anti-reflection sapphire crystal and a sapphire crystal case back. The watches are available in polished stainless steel or 18K rose gold. They are water-resistant to 30 metres. Once more the all-new Eterna·Matic 1948 collection strongly underlines the Eterna claim to fame in the specialized field of self-winding mechanical watches.
